The concept of private places to dine is a rare site in Kolkata these days. People eat out all together, specially women who were more bound in the conservative society of old times. Cabins in Kolkata are small eateries with splendid and 'finger-licking good food'. Following the cult of Iranian cabins in Mumbai during 1920s.
These places are named as cabins because of small ply wood partitioned rooms with curtains. These cabins provided a private space to people and were a favourite place for couple to spend some quality time. Some of the famous cabins can be listed as:
1. MITRA CABIN: This cabin has several branches but the first branch was opened in 1920 at Sova Bazar. This cabin was founded by Sushil Roy and her wife Smt. Gita Roy. Now, Shri. Tapas Roy , the grandson of Sushil Roy is in charge of this place.
The name 'Mitra' translates to friends andthey consider their customers as their friends.
Dishes to try out: Chicken Kobiraji(Rs 100), cutlets.
2. Anadi cabin: This cabin was founded in 1925 by Balaram Jana and is now maintained by the third generation of the family. It is located near Esplanade New Market Area.
Dishes to try out: This place is famous for its Mughlai Parathas(Rs. 46)which is served with alur torkari(potato curry). Don't forget to have their sauce:P
3. Dilkhusa cabin: This cabin is almost 115 years old and is now run by 4th generation of the family. The most famous dish here is Spanish Corquette and mutton cutlet.
PS: While they retain the word ‘cabin’ in their names, most of these restaurants have actual cabins any longer. The cabins have been removed and the seating has been made open.
