Did you know? There is a mosque in the middle of a lake in the heart of Kolkata. Yes, you have guessed it right. Lake Mosque is the only mosque in the city which is situated on an island in the middle of Rabindra Sarobar lake
.
Though being a such a big lake, the history of Rabindra Sarobar lake/Dhakuria lake is rather a blurry one. But the most accepted theory is that, the lake was built in early 1920s under Calcutta Development Trust which was created by Lord Curzon to beautify Calcutta. During the excavation of the lake, 3 cannons were unearthed which is now displayed on the southern shore of the lake. In 1926, a bridge was made connecting to the island by Burn and co.
The current Muttawali or the owner of the lake is: Saifuddin Ahmed. The property is not a public one but it is a private property. The property is dedicated to the service of God.
According to Saifuddin, his family was the resident of Gobindopur village. After the defeat odf Siraj-ud-daulla in the battle of Plassey, British took control of the area most obviously. British found that residents in the Fort william area are posing a huge problem. So, they decided to clear the residents nearby the land of Fort William in order to gain a better region of fire. The region is known as Maidan. Being one of the residents of that area, the ancestors of Saifuddin were also relocated and they were given the area of Dhakuria Lake as compensation.
Soon, Saif’s ancestors started buying the areas near the lake area but owing to the chaotic situations between hindus and muslims, they relocated themselves to the Park Circus area.
It was Sheikh Zaheeruddin, the great grandfather of Saifuddin, constructed the mosque around 1825.
How to go: To reach the mosque, one has to find the main gate of the lake club. Take the path left to that main gate. Going straight, one would find a large metal gate on the right. The gate will direct you to the iron bridge which further connects the mainland to the island.
