Recollecting some famous gold medalists of India at the Asian games over the years- Animikh Sengupta
A proud member of the South Asian Zone of
the Olympic Council of Asia, India has participated in all the Asian Games
since it’s inception in 1951. The Indian Olympic Association was established in
1927 and got immediate recognition by the International Olympic Committee.
Indonesia, Srilanka, Japan, the Phillipines, Malaysia & Thaliand are the
only 6 countries along with India who has partcipated in all the edition of
Asian Games. Let’s take a trip down to the memory lane and recollect some of
India’s greatest ever Gold Medal winning performances at the most coveted Asian
Games.
1951- The inaugural national games which
took place in the national capital Delhi was significantly good for the hosts
as we finished 2nd behind Japan. Sachin Nag won Gold Medal in
swimming. India bagged 10 gold medals in athletics, 2 in diving & 1 each in
football, swimming and water polo.
1954-1970- Indian Athletics showed complete
domination throughout this period. During this period India brought 25 gold
medals in Athletics. In the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok Kamaljit Sandhu made
India proud by winning the first gold medal for India in women’s athletics.
1982- Asian Games was back in New Delhi, India and the hosts finished 5th
in the medals table with
overall 57 medals of which 13 were gold. Following is

Since 1986-2010 India won more than 30 gold
medals in different categories of which again Athletics were the highest. But
in 2006 Shooting brought the maximum gold for India i.e 3.
2010- THE BEST INDIA EVER HAD
In the 16th Edition of Asian
Games in Guangzhou, India were at their supreme best as they finished with 64
medals in total of which 14 were Gold. This was India’s second best performance
ever since 1951. The nation also received first ever medals in Gymnastics and
Roller Sports.

2014- India ended the 17th Asian
Gamesin Incheon with 57 medals in total which includes 11 gold.
The nation is waiting with bated breath to
see where we finish in the ongoing Asian Games at Jakarta. Salute to all the men and women who made us
proud over the years in the coveted Asian competetion.
