Did you know? There is a mosque in the middle of a lake in the heart of Kolkata. Yes, you have guessed it right. Lake Mosque is the only mosque in the city which is situated on an island in the middle of Rabindra Sarobar lake . Though being a such a big lake, the history of Rabindra Sarobar lake/Dhakuria lake is rather a blurry one. But the most accepted theory is that, the lake was built in early 1920s under Calcutta Development Trust which was created by Lord Curzon to beautify Calcutta. During the excavation of the lake, 3 cannons were unearthed which is now displayed on the southern shore of the lake. In 1926, a bridge was made connecting to the island by Burn and co. The current Muttawali or the owner of the lake is: Saifuddin Ahmed. The property is not a public one but it is a private property. The property is dedicated to the service of God.
